Folk Awards News: Georgia Lewis amongst Horizon Award nominees

We're delighted, and very proud, here at RootBeat HQ. Georgia Lewis, whose debut album we released last year, has been nominated for the Horizon Award at this year's BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. This is a huge endorsement from the folk cognoscenti, and caps a remarkable critical response to her debut The Bird Who Sings Freedom. Songlines called it "An impeccable British folk album," with Rock n Reel giving it a 5-star review and an fRoots feature calling it "An impressive piece of work." In October, Georgia and her band recorded a special live track for Mark Radcliffe's BBC Radio 2 Folk Show, which became her second play on that show.

We look forward to the awards show in Belfast on 4th April.

Leveret's Inventions is out Friday

Order yours now to be sure of getting it before anyone else.

With their albums New Anything and In The Round and a long string of sell-out gigs, English instrumental trio Leveret have built a strong reputation as consummate musicians and captivating performers.  Now they return with Inventions, a new album of original material.  Recorded live at the renowned Realworld Studios and accompanied by a hand-written tunebook, Inventions brings Leveret’s trademark groove, energy and intuitive playing to bear on a set of new tunes composed by the three members of the trio.

Fiddler Sam Sweeney was the 2015 BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year, directs the National Youth Folk Ensemble and is known for his work with Bellowhead, Eliza Carthy's Wayward Band, The Full English and his own Made In The Great War project.   Melodeon genius Andy Cutting, a three-times  BBC Folk Awards Best Musician, is a compelling solo performer and currently works with Blowzabella, Topette, June Tabor, and Roger Daltry.  Concertina wizard Rob Harbron leads the English Acoustic Collective summer school and is known for his work with The Full English (Best Group and Best Album BBC Folk Awards 2014), Emma Reid, Fay Hield, Jon Boden and others.

Leveret’s playing is not arranged in the conventional sense – there is no prepared plan or structure and instead they rely on mutual trust, listening and responding.  At the same time their playing is relaxed and natural, drawing audiences in and inviting them to share in music making that is truly spontaneous and yet deeply timeless.  Much of Leveret’s material to date has been drawn from old manuscripts and tunebooks, but for all three players composing new tunes is a natural extension of the ‘page to stage’ process of rediscovering forgotten tunes from the archive.

Georgia Lewis

We're delighted to welcome our newest artist to RootBeat, Georgia Lewis. Her debut album, The Bird Who Sings Freedom, is our next release.

The Bird Who Sings Freedom is the debut album by Georgia Lewis, who has been hailed as the best voice to emerge from the English folk scene in recent years.

Well-worn traditional songs sit alongside two originals, an AE Housman poem and, opening the album, a setting of the words of Maya Angelou. Throughout, Georgia seeks the timeless themes in old words. Stories of love and loss, conflict, betrayal.

Produced by Lewis with Josh Clark (Kate Rusby's Life In A Paper Boat), the album features percussionist Evan Carson (Sam Kelly & the Lost Boys) and double bassist Tom Sweeney alongside longtime bandmates Rowan Piggott and Felix Miller. The Bird Who Sings Freedom is a glorious cocktail of modern folk influences, a potent statement of intent and a first glimpse at a burgeoning talent who looks set to put her stamp on English folk music.

Here the first track from the album now, and preorder your copy. The Bird Who Sings Freedom is released July 28th.

Ollie King – Diffractions

OUT 21st APRIL – PREORDER NOW

Ollie King is one of England’s foremost melodeon players and traditional folk singers. His first album, Gambit, was released three years ago to considerable acclaim: Songlines called it a “well-judged introduction to the work of a terrific musician.”

Diffractions sees King make a bold step forwards; it opens with what has become a viral sensation: on the morning of the Brexit referendum, Ollie posted a video of him playing Haydn’s Austria and Holst’s Thaxted, liberating them from their nationalistic overtones and pairing them as a symbol of European unity. The resulting social media storm ensured they made the record.

From there, King picks up the electric guitar and, with considerably more delicacy and craft than is usual when a folkie “goes electric”, sings a charming interpretation of the traditional Sweet Lemeney.

Throughout, King explores where folk music has overlapped with art music, the classical establishment; Haydn and Holst are joined by Vaughan Williams, Handel and Purcell, nestled cheek-by-jowl with Lal Waterson, Cecil Sharp and Nic Jones. Joined by the talents of Rosie Hood, Tom Kitching, Al Simpson and producer Tom Wright, King explores where folk melodies meet Baroque suites, where the music of England meets its European neighbours. Accompanied by the bold photography of Elly Lucas and textiles of Rosie Butler-Hall, DIFFRACTIONS unfolds as a remarkable, brave sophomore release by a deep-thinking folk musician.
