JigDoll is an exciting new project created by singer, musician and dancer Hannah James. Her first solo adventure, JigDoll combines all of these disciplines in a beautiful new show inspired by the life of the travelling player: sometimes exotic, sometimes frightening, it’s a world where home changes daily, and the only touchstones are the skills you carry with you and the people you meet on the way.

The JigDoll album is an album of music, songs and footwork taken from the live show. Most tracks have been recorded as they would be performed live. The album features Accordion, voice and foot percussion all played by Hannah. All the music on the album is newly composed by Hannah, using some traditional works and some newly written. The album is greatly influenced by the moving around Hannah has always done, and by the many musical gems she has picked up from countless people in countless places along the road. Further inspiration came from stories she uncovered from her Great-great Grandfather, Walter Andrews, a travelling music hall performer who made huge personal sacrifices for the life he had chosen. The themes of living life on the road, carrying only your skills and a few essential items with you, relying on the kindness of strangers who open their doors to you, are woven into this album. Both the music and the dance of JigDoll were born out of the traditions of song and dance that Hannah has learned along the way, and woven together with original ideas of her own. This fusion of old and new combines to create something that is, hopefully, authentically personal while paying fond tribute to the traditions, and to the travellers, dancers and singers in whose footsteps she has followed. It’s personal music; it is the music of her life so far…

JigDoll, the live show, uses newly-composed music and innovative stage techniques to weave a magical atmosphere around percussive dance. Each performance will see Hannah build the music live using loop pedals and instruments. Hannah’s own dynamic rhythms then become the centre-piece of the music through a specially designed dance platform, incorporating a range of sounds and surfaces, which takes instrumental foot percussion to a new level. Finally, she dances to the musical accompaniment she’s created: like the traditional travelling player, truly a one-woman band.
